A groundbreaking international study has confirmed that the West Philippine Sea and Benham Bank are among the richest soft coral habitats in the world—putting Philippine waters at the center of global marine biodiversity. Filipino scientists from the UP Marine Science Institute played a major role in the research, which used DNA analysis to reveal high species richness and possibly undiscovered coral species unique to the region.
Beyond its scientific significance, the study underscores the urgent need to protect the West Philippine Sea and Benham Bank from threats like illegal fishing, climate change, and deep-sea mining. Soft corals play a vital role in supporting reef life and may even help reefs adapt to environmental stress.
