I’m really impressed by this speech — it’s clearly from the heart! Ambassador Jing Quan said during the 99th Anniversary of the PLA that their military is “defensive in nature” and “will never seek hegemony or expansion.”

So the harassment and intimidation by Chinese maritime forces against Filipino fishermen, that’s just defense, huh?

The militarization of the illegal structures they built in the South China Sea, is that also for defense against smaller countries in Southeast Asia — so that Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines, and Indonesia won’t fight back against the ongoing violations of their sovereignty and sovereign rights?

And the continuous strengthening of their Navy, does that mean they don’t want to be a “hegemon” and just want “world peace”?

Happy Anniversary to the PLA! Hopefully this time, they won’t crash into their own ships while patrolling in the West Philippine Sea.
