Philippines Reaffirms Legality of Development Activities in Pag-asa and Lawak Islands

The ๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž ๐‚๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐ข๐ฅ (๐๐Œ๐‚) expressed support to the ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐ƒ๐ž๐Ÿ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐žโ€™s rejection of Chinaโ€™s recent statements regarding ๐๐š๐ -๐š๐ฌ๐š ๐š๐ง๐ ๐‹๐š๐ฐ๐š๐ค ๐ˆ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐–๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐’๐ž๐š.

In a statement, the NMC said the ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ฌโ€™ ๐๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐Œ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐œ๐ข๐ฉ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐Š๐š๐ฅ๐š๐ฒ๐š๐š๐ง ๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐ฅ๐š๐ฐ๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐ž๐ฑ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ง๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž aimed at improving the welfare and safety of Filipinos in the area.

The council reiterated that ๐‚๐ก๐ข๐ง๐šโ€™๐ฌ โ€œ๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ž-๐๐š๐ฌ๐ก ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐žโ€ ๐œ๐ฅ๐š๐ข๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐š๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง๐ฏ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐›๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž 2016 ๐€๐ซ๐›๐ข๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐€๐ฐ๐š๐ซ๐ under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), describing the ruling as final and legally binding.

Moreover, the NMC also reaffirmed the Philippinesโ€™ commitment to international law, peaceful dispute resolution, and a rules-based order in the West Philippine Sea.
