𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐉𝐚𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐚 has called for a deeper public understanding of the Philippines’ position in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), emphasizing that the 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 are a 𝐝𝐮𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.
According to Commodore Tarriela, 𝐰𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲’𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 would be 𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 has no rightful claim to its own waters, which would ultimately disadvantage future generations of Filipinos.
