Defending the West Philippine Sea is a National Duty — Beyond any President

During the commemoration of the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month in Rizal Park on Monday, PCG Spokesperson for the WPS, Commodore Jay Tarriela reminded us once again that the defense of the West Philippine Sea is bigger than politics, bigger than one administration, and must endure long after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s term.

He stressed that every Filipino leader — today and in the future — must uphold our sovereignty, secure our resources, and protect the seas that will sustain generations to come. Commodore Tarriela pointed out that the fight for maritime rights is not just about one administration’s policy but about ensuring long-term security, access to resources, and the protection of future generations.

Despite foreign intrusions and mounting pressures, he emphasized that the Philippines must remain firm and consistent in its position — showing the world that our resolve will never weaken. The call serves as both a reminder and a challenge for the nation’s future leadership to carry forward the defense of maritime sovereignty as a national duty beyond political terms.

Finally, we are once again reminded that our fight in the WPS is not just the responsibility of one president, but the solemn duty of the entire nation.
