During the Saturday News Forum on June 7, 2025, Commodore Jay Tarriela, PCG Spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, emphasized the critical need for public awareness and strong leadership as the nation prepares for the 2028 elections. He warned against electing a leader who would downplay or abandon the country’s firm stance on the West Philippine Sea, stressing that past rhetoric without action has already harmed the nation’s sovereign position.
Commodore Tarriela called for vigilance to ensure that the next president will not revert to empty promises or fear-based narratives.
He also highlighted the importance of building on the gains made under President Bongbong Marcos, particularly in defending national sovereignty. This is not merely a political issue, but a matter of patriotism, national security, food security, and dignity for the Filipino people.
He urged future leaders to approach the WPS issue with courage and principle, putting the national interest above all else.
