PCG: China’s “Clearing Ops” Meant to Threaten Filipino Fishermen in the West Philippine Sea

The 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝 (𝐏𝐂𝐆) described the so-called “𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬” of the 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝 (𝐂𝐂𝐆) as an 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐣𝐨 𝐝𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜.

The CCG announced via radio that it would conduct “clearing operations” in a specified area near 𝐁𝐚𝐣𝐨 𝐝𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝟏𝟏 𝐚.𝐦. 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟔 𝐩.𝐦.

According to 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐀𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐉𝐚𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐚, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝 (𝐏𝐂𝐆) 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞, 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐂𝐆.

Instead, Rear Admiral Tarriela said that the 𝐏𝐂𝐆 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐭 in coordination with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) deployed in Bajo de Masinloc.
