PCG Joins Reef Restoration, Biodiversity Research in WPS

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) participated in biodiversity research efforts in the Kalayaan Island Group, West Philippine Sea (WPS) to identify and map priority reef restoration sites.

In collaboration with the UP Marine Science Institute and the DENR Biodiversity Management Bureau, the PCG Marine Science Group (MSG) took part in a research project that ran until February 28.

The initiative served as a prelude to the PCG’s broader efforts in rehabilitating degraded coral reefs and marine ecosystems in the WPS. The project aimed to establish baseline biodiversity data, with MSG conducting assessments on seaweed diversity, mollusk populations, seagrass distribution, and habitat interactions around Pagasa Island.

The PCG emphasized that the activity aligned with its mandate on marine environment protection, recognizing the vital role of marine resources for the Filipino people.
