Commodore Jay Tarriela, PCG Spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, emphasized during the House of Representatives Tri-Committee Hearing on June 5, 2025, that the fight to defend the West Philippine Sea is not only against external threats like China’s large vessels but also against internal challenges such as misinformation and fake news. He warned that disinformation can mislead the youth and divide Filipinos, making it harder for the nation to stand united on this critical issue. Without a clear understanding of the truth, efforts to build a collective national stance across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao may falter.
He further stressed that the most difficult challenge for the government today is achieving unity among Filipinos, which is why a transparency initiative has been launched under the current administration. This effort aims to ensure that the public receives accurate, verified information to combat false narratives and foster national solidarity.
