China’s Research Vessel Enters Philippine Waters Without Permission

A Chinese research vessel capable of conducting deep-sea drilling spent 25 days inside the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ), including roughly three weeks within the 12-nautical-mile territorial sea surrounding Bajo de Masinloc (BDM), according to Philippine Coast Guard Spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, π‘πžπšπ« π€ππ¦π’π«πšπ₯ π‰πšπ² π“πšπ«π«π’πžπ₯𝐚 on Friday, September 4, 2026.

The vessel, Haiyang Dizhi Shihao, is a 76-meter research ship operated by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey under China’s Ministry of Natural Resources. PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Tarriela said the πƒπžπ©πšπ«ππ¦πžπ§π 𝐨𝐟 π…π¨π«πžπ’π π§ π€πŸπŸπšπ’π«π¬ confirmed that no Philippine permit has been issued for marine scientific research by the vessel. Though he did not confirm that it actually conducted drilling at BDM, the vessel’s slow movements are being treated as an indication of possible unauthorized marine scientific research activity, says Rear Admiral Tarriela.
