BRP Teresa Magbanua Conducts Maritime Law Enforcement Patrol in Response to Chinese Coast Guard Presence

In a decisive move to uphold our sovereign rights and sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua was deployed to conduct maritime law enforcement patrols in response to the presence of the Chinese Coast Guard vessel CCG-5303. This operation was initiated following the detection of the foreign vessel, monitored through Canada’s Dark Vessel Detection program, approximately 39 nautical miles off the coast of Pangasinan.

Upon arrival at the scene, the BRP Teresa Magbanua engaged CCG-5303 via radio communication, challenging its presence and asserting that the vessel lacked legal authority to operate within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Philippines. The Chinese Coast Guard responded by claiming that the PCG had entered waters under China’s jurisdiction, asserting its sovereignty over Huangyan Island and its adjacent waters.

In light of this assertion, the PCG reiterated its position, emphasizing its legitimate authority based on the Philippine Maritime Zones Act, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and the 2016 Arbitral Award, which reinforces the Philippines’ maritime rights.

Furthermore, the PCG observed the approach of another Chinese vessel, CCG-4203, to the vicinity of CCG-5303. Despite this, the BRP Teresa Magbanua remains steadfast in its mission, demonstrating unwavering commitment to protecting the Philippines’ maritime rights.

The Philippine Coast Guard will continue to patrol the area diligently, ensuring the security and integrity of our maritime jurisdiction.
